Way of the Cross

Station 9: Jesus Falls for the Third Time
Mixed media

I was invited to participate in “Way of the Cross,” a Lenten reflection on the Stations of the Cross at Salina’s Christ Cathedral. My contribution is a mixed media painting inspired by the 9th Station: Jesus Falls for the Third Time.

Each year, in the four weeks leading to Easter, people gather on Wednesday evenings at Christ Cathedral to “walk the way,” represented by wood-carved stations stops, to pray and hear music, engaging in a multisensory way with the last few days and hours of the life of Jesus, including those he interacted with. “The addition of each artist’s interpretation of their chosen Station will make this experience even more special this year,” says Mo. Shay Craig, Dean of Christ Cathedral.

When I began my research for this project, I discovered there’s no corresponding scripture for the anecdote. Out of the fourteen traditional Stations of the Cross, only eight have a clear scriptural foundation. When asked for a written statement, I simply wrote a haiku:

Layered mystery
Deep commitment, resilience
Spirit finds a way

The opening reception for “Ways of the Cross” is Friday, February 16, 2024 from 5:30-8pm. The show runs through March 30, 2024. It’s open to the public by appointment, and can also be viewed when attending Stations of the Cross services at 6pm on Wednesdays during Lent, Saturday Holy Eucharist at 5pm, and Sunday Holy Eucharist at 10am.

I hope you’ll stop by and have a look at all the work of the 14 artists who are included in the show.
