On February 18, I started #The100DayProject, along with millions of other artists around the world. I planned to draw and post a portrait of someone whose birthday was on that day. These ‘blind contour’ drawings (continuous line, not looking at the page while I draw) would be done in a 4” x 4” concertina sketchbook and completed in 5 minutes or less.

As soon as I made the rules, I started to rebel against the constraints. Here’s the list of changes I made in my own rules:

  • I made the drawings on bigger pieces of paper (some of them even run off the edge of a 9” x 12” sheet!)

  • I looked at the paper while drawing, and scribbled instead of using a continuous line

  • I spent longer than 5 minutes

  • I traced — but also enhanced! — a photograph (oh, the shame 😞)

But I HAVE drawn and posted daily. And to tell you the truth, that was the ultimate goal. Above are three of current favs.

At the end of the 100 days I want to look at my Instagram page and see consistency and improvement. Take a look at the current state of my page and see if you can spot the drawings where I cheated. I bet it’s obvious!
